CHAPUYA CAMP
Chapuya
Camp is owned by an Iringa based registered tourism company,
Jungle Giraffe Safari Tours Ltd, while the
day to day management of the Chapuya Camp is handled by M.R.
Hotels Ltd. of Iringa. Chapuya Camp is a result of the efforts
to improve natural resource management in the Mtera area.
With the support from the MEMA Projects (1999 –
2003) the villages surrounding the lake developed the idea
of diversifying the use of their local natural resources.
The opportunities for tourism were investigated and investors
invited to the area. Danida has supported the investor in
the establishment of the camp through the Private Sector Programme,
justified by the community involvement and the environmental
profile of the camp.
The
village of Migoli is thus a main stakeholder in the enterprise
and the 40-acre camp area is acquired from the village on
rental basis. Moreover all activities provided to the guest
are organized and coordinated by the village. In this way
the local community benefits from the Camp both by obtaining
the monthly rent and from providing activities. A USD 15 fee
per group is also paid to the village natural resources committee
to support coordination costs and general development activities
in the village.
